SPEAKER'S CORNER: The Concept of Mass Shootings

Updated: Jun 29, 2022

We live in an interesting time when gang shootings are being grouped together with mass shootings to hide white America's social ambiguity. While gang shootings can produce deaths of more than 4 people, the psychological motivation is different and should be analyzed differently.

Gang shootings are usually stemmed from Systematic racism, drugs, prostitution, revenge and money. Meanwhile, Mass Shootings (like those Uvalde, Texas) are motivated due to the shooter's personal bias and psychological imbalances. Both of this issues can fixed but in a different way, which is why it is bad that they are being grouped under the same category.

America goes through a cycle of trying to hide the truth, instead of facing the reality and trying to fix it. By hiding the side effects of suburbia, white America is prolonging this epidemic instead of recognizing that there needs to be a change. We could all benefit from diversifyingn predominantly white neighborhoods. Growth comes from a society living in harmony with differences. Additionally, we need to learn to notice the children struggling from emotional neglect and bullying before they themselves become destructive. While there are other factors that play an important role on the development of the mental imbalances in mass shooters, we cannot deny that racial separation and generational bigotry are critical issues that mold descrutive behavior. When you are told that you are superior and are residing in an area that supports that delusional notion, it's not surprising that you would want to make this misconception a reality.

Gang shootings, on the other hand, can be resolved by fixing the ghetto, building an economy in these areas, removing the king pins and ending prostitution. An improved education services and rehabilitation is also necessary to heal the community, which will reduce shootings. These communities can also benefit from diversifying. But not in the modern gentrification process that relocates families of color - keeping them further desinfranchised. The action of diversifying low-income neighborhoods should happen naturally, through the slow transition of economic improvements of the area. By giving residents work, utilities, and constructive outlets; the neighborhoods will improve and the crime rates will decrease.

As you can see, there are two different solutions to solve two different forms of multiple killings of victims. While diversity plays a key role in both situations; the motivation behind the need to diversify is different, which changes the way we approach these issues.

Historically, our country hides things it is ashamed of. From segregation practices in Northern and Southern states; to race wars in supposed progressive cities; to sexism; and to the takeover of our democracy by Big Businesses. In all of these situations, healing didn't start until we faced the problem head on. While we are still trying to understand how much the Free Market/Big Businesses have destroyed our freedom, economy, and planet's resources... we can start taking mass media's ability to alter the view of the situation with their propaganda and to start trying to own up to the real problem behind the epidemic.
